Description
DL-arginine is an amino acid containing two chiral centres, consisting of an equimolar mixture of the two enantiomers, D-arginine and L-arginine.
Chemical Properties
It is a white crystalline powder, readily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in diethyl ether; its aqueous solution is strongly alkaline.
Uses
DL-Arginine is used in the synthesis of creatine and polyamines. DL-Arg is used in physicochemical analysis of amino acid complexation dynamics and crystal structure formations.

ChEBI: Arginine is an alpha-amino acid that is glycine in which the alpha-is substituted by a 3-guanidinopropyl group. It has a role as a fundamental metabolite. It is a member of guanidines, a polar amino acid and an alpha-amino acid. It contains a 3-carbamimidamidopropyl group. It is a conjugate base of an argininium(1+). It is a conjugate acid of an argininate.
Preparation
DL-arginine is produced from L-arginine via a racemisation reaction catalysed by salicylaldehyde.
