Synthesis

GENERAL METHOD: Phenylethanol (2.14 mmol) was dissolved in anhydrous dichloromethane (6 mL) with triethylamine (0.36 mL, 2.59 mmol) under nitrogen protection and cooled to 0 °C. Subsequently, methanesulfonyl chloride (0.18 mL, 2.31 mmol) was slowly added dropwise and the reaction temperature was maintained at 0 °C for 1 hour. After that, the reaction mixture was gradually warmed up to room temperature and stirring was continued for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3 x 30 mL). The organic phases were combined and washed sequentially with 10% aqueous hydrochloric acid and saturated brine and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed by concentration under reduced pressure, and the resulting crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography, sequentially using dichloromethane and chloroform as eluents, to obtain the target product, phenethyl methanesulfonate, the structure of which was confirmed by the method described in the Supplementary Material.
