Chemical Properties

1,1-Dichloro-1-nitroethane is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor; causes tears

Uses

Fumigant insecticide

General Description

A colorless liquid. Strongly irritates skin and eyes. Toxic by ingestion and inhalation. Flash point 165°F. Denser than water and slightly soluble in water. Used as a solvent.

Air & Water Reactions

Slightly soluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

1,1-DICHLORO-1-NITROETHANE is incompatible with oxidizers. 1,1-DICHLORO-1-NITROETHANE will attack some forms of plastics, rubber and coatings.

Health Hazard

High concentrations cause lacrimation, increased nasal secretions, coughing, pulmonary rales, and weakness in animals. No human experience is reported.

Fire Hazard

Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Toxic gases and vapors, such as nitrogen oxides, hydrogen chloride, and carbon monoxide, may be released in a fire.

Safety Profile

Poison by ingestion and intraperitoneal routes. Moderately toxic by inhalation. A strong irritant. Inhalation causes pulmonary edema. A fumigant for produce. Flammable when exposed to heat, flame, or oxidizers. Can react vigorously with oxidning materials. To fight fire, use water, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits highly toxic fumes of Cl and NOx.

Potential Exposure

This material is used as a fumigant insecticide. Therefore, those engaged in the manufacture, formulation and application of this material may be exposed

First aid

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.Medical observation is recommended for 24-48 h afterbreathing overexposure, as pulmonary edema may bedelayed. As first aid for pulmonary edema, a doctor orauthorized paramedic may consider administering a corticosteroid spray.

Carcinogenicity

In Salmonella typhimurium assays 1,1- dichloro-1-nitroethane was mutagenic in the TA100 and TA97 stains but not in TA1535 or TA98.
The 2003 ACGIH threshold limit valuetime- weighted average (TLV-TWA) for 1,1- dichloro-1-nitroethane is 2ppm (12mg/m3).

storage

Color Code—Blue: Health Hazard/Poison: Storein a secure poison location. Prior to working with thischemical you should be trained on its proper handling andstorage. Store in tightly closed containers in a refrigeratoraway from oxidizers and sources of ignition. Where possible, automatically pump liquid from drums or other storagecontainers to process containers.

Shipping

UN2650 1,1-Dichloro-1-nitroethane, Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials.

Incompatibilities

Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, and epoxides. Corrosive to iron in the presence of moisture

Waste Disposal

Incineration (816C, 0.5 second for primary combustion; 1204C, 1.0 second for secondary combustion). The formation of elemental chlorine can be prevented through injection of steam or methane into the combustion process. nitrogen oxides may be abated through the use of thermal or catalytic devices.
