Used in the synthesis of copolymers of styrene and 2-methoxyethyl methacrylate.

Definition

ChEBI: Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate is a poly(ethylene glycol) compound having a methacrylate group at the alpha-terminus and a methyl group at the omega-terminus.

Application

2-Methoxyethyl methacrylate is a monomer that can be used to prepare poly(2-methoxyethyl methacrylate) (PMEMA) polymers.When PMEMA polymers undergo thermal decomposition at temperatures up to 500°C, two different reactions occur. The primary reaction is depolymerisation, where the only product is the monomer. The secondary reaction is esterolysis, which produces very small amounts of volatile products including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethylene, isobutylene, methyl vinyl ether, methanol and formaldehyde.

General Description

Polymers prepared from this monomer may have uses in polyelectrolytes and may be biocompatible.
