Chemical Properties

Pale yellow to light brown paste, odorless and tasteless. Excellent dispersibility, diffusion, wetting, and emulsification in water, with film-forming properties. Acid and alkali resistant. When n = 2-12, d₄²⁰ is 1.009-1.104; n_D²⁰ is 1.5090-1.4870. Soluble in hot water.

Uses

Polyethylene glycol tert-octyl phenyl ether is formed by the polycondensation of octylphenol and ethylene oxide in the presence of an alkali catalyst. It is mainly used as liquid detergent, dye color improver or emulsifier in the textile industry.

A nonionic, non-denaturing detergent, it is used for solubilising membrane proteins during isolation of membrane-protein complexes. n ~ 8. It has a role as a detergent. It is an aromatic ether, a poly(ethylene glycol) derivative and a hydroxypolyether. It is functionally related to a 4-octylphenol.
