1,2-Dichloroethyl acetate Usage And Synthesis

Description

Dichloroethyl acetate is a water-white liquid.Molecular weight=155.32; Boiling point=58-65℃ at13 mmHg; Flash point=152℃. Hazard Identification(based on NFPA-704 M Rating System): Health 1,Flammability 1, Reactivity 0. Insoluble in water.

Chemical Properties

Dichloroethyl acetate is a water-white liquid

Uses

1,2-Dichloroethanol Acetate is a by-product of water disinfection by ozone, chlorine dioxide, chloramine, and chlorine. It is also a reagent used in the synthesis of 2-Amino-5-nitrothiazole.

General Description

Water-white liquid. Density 1.23 g / cm3. Flash point 307°F. Low toxicity. Miscible with alcohol and ethyl ether. Insoluble in water. Used in organic synthesis.

Air & Water Reactions

Insoluble in water.

Reactivity Profile

1,2-Dichloroethyl acetate is a halogenated ester. React with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by interaction with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing with alkali metals and hydrides.

Health Hazard

1,2-Dichloroethyl acetate is toxic by inhalation.

Fire Hazard

May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Vapors may travel to a source of ignition and flash back. Container may explode in heat of fire. Vapor explosion hazard indoors, outdoors or in sewers. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard. When heated to decomposition, 1,2-Dichloroethyl acetate may emit highly toxic fumes of phosgene. Esters may explode on mixing with nitrates.

Potential Exposure

This material is used in organic synthesis.

First aid

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.

storage

Color Code—Green: General storage may be used.Prior to working with this chemical you should be trainedon its proper handling and storage. Store in tightly closedcontainers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from oxidizers and nitrates. Where possible, automatically pump liquid from drums or other storage containers to processcontainers.

Shipping

UN1993 Flammable liquids, n.o.s., Hazard Class: 3; Labels: 3-Flammable liquid, Technical Name Required

Incompatibilities

Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, and epoxides. Contact with strong oxidizing acids may cause an exothermic reaction strong enough to ignite reaction products. May explode on contact with nitrates and heat. Reacts with caustic solutions.
