4-Methyl-3-nitroaniline Usage And Synthesis
Description
4-Methyl-3-nitroaniline is one of the intermediates or products in the photochemical transformations (λ=254 nm) of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) in aqueous solutions containing the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) and the anionic nucleophile borohydride (BH4-)[1].
Chemical Properties
Orange Crystalline Solid
Uses
4-Methyl-3-nitroaniline is a compound useful in organic synthesis. It is used to make pigments and dyes. It could also be used in Environmental Testing. It could be used as raw material to synthesized N-(4-methyl-3-nitrophenyl)-4-(4-methylpiperazin-1-ylmethyl)benzamide through acylation[2].
Definition
ChEBI: 4-Amino-2-nitrotoluene is a C-nitro compound.

Reactivity Profile
4-Methyl-3-nitroaniline is incompatible with acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides, chloroformates and strong oxidizing agents (NTP, 1992).
Hazard
Toxic by ingestion.
Fire Hazard
Excerpt from ERG Guide 153 [Substances - Toxic and/or Corrosive (Combustible)]: Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily. When heated, vapors may form explosive mixtures with air: indoors, outdoors and sewers explosion hazards. Those substances designated with a (P) may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may pollute waterways. Substance may be transported in a molten form. (ERG, 2020)
Safety Profile
Poison by ingestion andintravenous routes. Combustible when exposed to heat orflame. To fight fire, use CO2, spray, foam. When heated todecomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx.
Purification Methods
Crystallise the aniline from hot water (charcoal), then ethanol and dry it in a vacuum desiccator. [Beilstein 12 H 966.]
