Uses

2-Methyl-3-nitroanisole may be used in chemical synthesis studies.

Synthesis

A solution of dimethyl sulfoxide (80 mL) was added to a 500 mL three-necked vial at 25 ??. 29.7 g (0.32 mol) of methanol and 14 g (0.35 mol) of 60% sodium hydride were added slowly with stirring, the temperature was raised to 120 ??, and a solution of dimethyl sulfoxide containing 56.3 g (0.3 mol) of 2-methyl-3-nitrochlorobenzene was added dropwise. After dropwise reaction for 3 h. Decrease to 25 ??, add toluene (150 mL) and water (200 mL), partitioning, the aqueous layer was extracted with toluene (100 mL) twice, 50 mL each time, combined with the organic phase and washed with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide (40 mL) once, partitioning. The organic layer was washed with water, the organic layer was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. Get 2-methyl-3-nitro anisole.

Purification Methods
