GENERAL METHODS: Triphenylphosphine oxide or its sulfide (1 mmol), anhydrous hexane (1 mL) and 1c (1 mmol) were sequentially added to Schlenk tubes under nitrogen atmosphere protection. The reaction was carried out at room temperature for 10 min and the progress of the reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was filtered through a silica gel pad and washed several times with ethyl acetate. Subsequently, the ethyl acetate was removed by evaporation and the residue was purified by fast column chromatography on silica gel, using pure cyclohexane as eluent, to afford the target product tris(4-trifluorotoluene)phosphine. The product yield was determined by gas chromatography (GC) without further purification.
