4-Biphenylcarboxylic acid Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
white to light yellow crystal powder
Uses
Biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid is employed in the synthesis, characterization of europium, terbium complexes.
Synthesis Reference(s)
Synthetic Communications, 25, p. 3695, 1995 DOI: 10.1080/00397919508015507
Safety Profile
Experimental reproductive effects. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating vapors.
Synthesis
Under argon protection, 2.75 g (13.8 mmol) of 4-bromobenzoic acid, 2 g (16.4 mmol) of phenylboronic acid, 32.71 g (27.3 mmol) of K2CO, and 0.2 g of palladium tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) were added to 40 mL of dioxyhexahydroxane solvent/water (10:1), and heated up to 75 ??C, and the reaction was completely monitored by TLC after 5h. The reaction solution was cooled, filtered, adjusted PH to 2-3, a large amount of white solid was generated, filtered to obtain a white solid 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid 2.30 g, yield 84.9%.
Purification Methods
Crystallise the acid from *C6H6/pet ether or aqueous EtOH. [Beilstein 9 IV 2479.]
