Chloroiridic Acid acts as a synthetic reagent for the thermolytic formation of noble metals and their oxides from chloride precusors.

Synthesis

Chloroiridic acid (H3IrCl6) is prepd. By heating Ir or a mixture contg. Ir (e.g., mixture contig. Ir which have been used in another field such as the recovery of Ir, etc.) in conc. Hydrochloric acid, and dissolving the Ir while suspending it and blowing gaseous chlorine into the suspension.
