Chemical Properties

Yellowish brown powder. Soluble in nitrobenzene, xylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, slightly soluble in ethanol, acetone, benzene, pyridine, toluene, o-chlorophenol. Bluish purple in concentrated nitric acid, orange when diluted. Date red in alkaline insurance powder reducing solution.

Uses

Vat Orange 1 is a commercial dye used predominately for cotton fabrics.

Synthesis

Dibromo-7,14-dibenzpyrenequinone, Indanthren Golden Yellow RK, is prepared by bromination in the melt.
