General procedure for the synthesis of 2-cyanopyridine-3-carboxylic acid from methyl 2-cyanopyridine-3-carboxylate: a mixture of methyl 2-cyanopyridine-3-carboxylate (3.16 g, 19.5 mmol), methanol (60 mL), and 1M sodium hydroxide solution (22 mL) was stirred and reacted for 8 hours at room temperature. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was diluted with water (20 mL) and dichloromethane (50 mL) and the solution was subsequently acidified with 1M hydrochloric acid under cooling conditions. The precipitate was collected, washed sequentially with water and hexane and finally dried under vacuum.
