General procedure for the synthesis of 3-methoxypyridine-2-carbaldehyde using 3-methoxy-2-methylpyridine as starting material: selenium dioxide (478 mg, 4.30 mmol) was dissolved in dioxane (8 mL) and heated to 80 °C. Subsequently, a solution of 3-methoxy-2-methylpyridine (265 mg, 2.15 mmol) in dioxane (2 mL) was slowly added. The reaction mixture was continuously stirred at 80 °C for 18 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered to remove insoluble impurities. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the solvent to give the crude product. Finally, the crude product was purified by column chromatography to afford the target compound 3-methoxypyridine-2-carboxaldehyde as a yellow gel in 27% yield.
