Step 3: To a 500 mL round bottom flask purged with nitrogen and maintained in an inert atmosphere under nitrogen protection was added a mixture of 5-bromo-1-chloroisoquinoline (17.5 g, 72.16 mmol, 1.00 eq.), AcNH2 (85.8 g, 1.45 mol, 20.15 eq.) and potassium carbonate (49.0 g, 354.53 mmol, 4.91 equivalent) in a mixture. The reaction mixture was stirred at 180 °C for 3 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and slowly poured into 2000 mL of water with stirring. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration to give 12.0 g (75% yield) of 5-bromoisoquinolin-1-amine as a brown solid.
