Chemical Properties
Red to purplish red crystals or crystalline powder. Industrial products are yellow to orange grease or organic solvent solutions with stable properties. Can also be dispersed in water powder or particles. Carotenoids. Unstable to oxygen and light, must be stored in inert gas-filled light-shielding containers. Insoluble in water and glycerol. Very insoluble in ethanol. Slightly soluble in vegetable oil (0.7g/100m1), soluble in chloroform (30g/100m1). Melting point 134～138℃. Natural products exist in egg yolk, etc.
Uses
Ethyl 8''-apo-β-caroten-8''-oate is an antioxidant β-carotene (C184250) found in marigold flowers and oranges. It is also used as an organic dye in cosmetics.
Purification Methods
Recrystallise the ester from pet ether or pet ether/EtOAc. Store it in the dark under N2 or Ar at -20o. [Beilstein 9 IV 2701 for Me ester]
