Uses

tert-Butylmagnesium chloride is a Grignard reagent used in organic synthesis. It is also involved in copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with primary-alkyl halides.

Synthesis

Preparation of tert-butyl magnesium chloride: remove the oxide film on the surface of the magnesium bar with sandpaper and cut into fine chips. Weigh 3.6 g (0.15 mol) of magnesium chips, added to a four-necked flask equipped with a nitrogen protection device, stirrer, reflux condenser and constant-pressure dropping funnel (the top of the reflux condenser tube is installed with a CaCl2 drying tube), the reaction flask was passed nitrogen for about 10 min to remove the air in the four-necked flask, and then adjusted the flow rate of nitrogen, and in the reaction system continued to pass a very small amount of nitrogen. 35 mL of refined tetrahydrofuran was added to the four-necked flask, and then 13.9 g (0.15 mol) of tert-butyl chloride was weighed, and about 3.5 g of tert-butyl chloride was added to the four-necked flask first, and the remaining 10.4 g of tert-butyl chloride was mixed with 150 mL of refined tetrahydrofuran and added to the constant-pressure dispensing funnel. Add a small grain of iodine, slightly hot, a small amount of bubbles produced, the color of iodine receded, the reaction triggered to keep the reaction system slightly boiled is appropriate, drop after drop, stirring the reaction for 3 ~ 4 h, until the magnesium debris completely disappeared, a gray solution.
