Can be synthesized from 2-ethoxy-Δ3-dihydropyrone and phosphoric acid; and cis- and trans-isomers can be prepared from the corresponding penta-2,4-dien-1-ol (cis- or trans-form) in methylene chloride in the presence of manganese dioxide.
