4-Methoxy-pyridin-2-ol Usage And Synthesis

General procedure for the synthesis of 4-methoxy-2-pyridone from 4-methoxypyridine-N-oxide: 4-methoxypyridine-N-oxide (1.5 g, 1.98 mmol) was dissolved in acetic anhydride (45 mL) and heated to reflux overnight under nitrogen protection. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the acetic anhydride. The residue was diluted with distilled water (15 mL) and methanol (15 mL) and stirred overnight at room temperature. Subsequently, all volatiles were removed and the residue was purified by fast column chromatography (silica gel, dichloromethane/methanol gradient elution, 0 to 10% methanol) to afford 4-methoxy-2-pyridinone (1.1 g, 71% yield) as a brown solid.LC-MS (ESI): m/z [M + H]+ 126.0.
