Step 2: Preparation of 4-isobutoxybenzaldehyde (Compound XIII) 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde (10 g, 0.082 mol), potassium carbonate (33.95 g, 0.246 mol) and potassium iodide (1.36 g, 0.008 mol) were suspended in N,N-dimethylformamide (50 mL). Isobutyl bromide (26.7 mL, 0.246 mol) was added to the suspension and the reaction was subsequently heated at 70 °C and protected by nitrogen for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and the reaction mixture was diluted with 150 mL of water and then extracted with 300 mL of ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed five times with 150 mL of 10% NaCl solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 14.3 g (98% yield) of the yellow oily product 4-isobutoxybenzaldehyde (Compound XIII).
