Synthesis

General procedure for the synthesis of n-propylhydrazine hydrochloride from tert-butyl 2-propylhydrazine-1-carboxylate: To a three-necked round-bottomed flask equipped with a stirrer was added 17.4 grams of BOC-propylhydrazine and 90 ml of a dichloromethane solution of 2M hydrochloric acid. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours to ensure complete reaction. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by reduced pressure distillation and the crude product obtained was pulped with 40 ml of dichloromethane. The solvent was again removed by distillation under reduced pressure, resulting in 9.4 g of white solid product. The product was analyzed by liquid chromatography (LC) with a purity of more than 98% and a yield of 85%.
