[1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]dichloropalladium(II) is a precatalyst used in the production of acrylic acid sodium salt via coupling of CO2 with ethene.

Synthesis

Add acetonitrile 3L in the reaction kettle, heat, add palladium chloride 177g (1.0mol) in 3 batches, add acetonitrile 2L, reflux reaction for 2~3h. When the reaction solution becomes brown-red clarified liquid, filter it while it is still hot, filter out a small amount of insoluble matter, add dppe 398g (1.0mol) in the filtrate, stir the reaction for 0.5h. Cool down to room temperature, filtrate, and wash the cake with cold tetrahydrofuran and water for 3~4 times in turn, vacuum drying for 7h to obtain 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane palladium(II) 552g. The filter cake was washed with cold tetrahydrofuran and water for 3~4 times, and then dried under vacuum for 7h to obtain 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane palladium(II) dichloride 552g, with 96% yield. The solvent slow evaporation method was used to cultivate single crystal, appropriate amount of solid product was dissolved in CHCl3, sealed with plastic wrap, left to stand, and naturally evaporated for 30d to obtain white flaky crystals.

Precautions

This palladium catalyst, also known as [1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]dichloropalladium(II), presents as a very pale yellow to yellow crystalline powder. Store under inert gas, at ambient temperatures and protected from moisture. This substance is moisture sensitive. [1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]palladium(II) Dichloride is incompatible with oxidizing agents. This chemical is harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled. It causes skin irritation as well as serious eye irritation.
