Magnesium fluosilicate Usage And Synthesis

Application

1. Cement Concrete Curing and Strengthening Agent
Magnesium fluorosilicate is an excellent curing agent for cement and other products. Domestic and international regulations stipulate that 1-5% magnesium fluorosilicate should be added to cement as a hardener. It not only improves the cracking and erosion resistance of cement but also increases its flexural strength. Furthermore, it can be used as an antifreeze agent for concrete surface treatment and effectively improves the thermal insulation properties of mixed cement.
2. Cement Performance Improver
It mainly improves the performance of cement concrete in two ways: solving white spots on the surface of cement products and improving white spots and corrosion in painted cement products. The specific solution is to add 0.1-0.3% (by weight) of magnesium fluorosilicate additive at the construction site. Experiments show that cement containing the improver has a Ca(OH)2 content of less than 0.1%, an alkalinity only one-quarter that of naturally set cement, and good wind and corrosion resistance.
3. Other Material Additives
This additive can also be applied to foamed resin products. Because conventionally functional foamed resin products are generally not heat-resistant, flammable, and have poor chemical resistance, their synthesis is greatly limited. To overcome this limitation, some foreign companies have successfully developed foamed resins with excellent fire resistance, thermal conductivity, and various mechanical properties by adding a mixed solution of sodium silicate to the synthesized product, followed by drying and then treating with a magnesium fluorosilicate solution.

4. Wood Preservatives
Magnesium fluorosilicate is generally used as a wood preservative abroad. Generally, applying magnesium fluorosilicate to Lauan plywood produces five-layer plywood with excellent mildew resistance. Furthermore, mixing magnesium fluorosilicate with pentachlorobenzene provides even better corrosion and mildew resistance. Simultaneously, the addition of silica compounds significantly improves the strength, stiffness, and insulation properties of the raw material.

5. Other Uses
In addition to its wide application in cement, synthetic wood panels, and resin foam, magnesium fluorosilicate can also be added as an additive to toothpaste and mouthwash to improve and prevent the formation of dental plaque; it can also be used in the ceramics industry, glass industry, and agriculture.

Description

Magnesium silicofluoride is a white crystallinesolid. Molecular weight= 274.52. Hazard Identification(based on NFPA-704 M Rating System): Health 3,Flammability 0, Reactivity 0. Soluble in water.

Chemical Properties

Colorless or white rhombus or needle-shaped crystals. Odorless. Soluble in water and dilute acid, poorly soluble in hydrofluoric acid, and insoluble in alcohol.

General Description

Crystalline solid. Decomposes at 120°C. Contact may cause slight irritation to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. May be slightly toxic by ingestion. Used to make other chemicals.

Air & Water Reactions

Water soluble.

Reactivity Profile

Magnesium fluosilicate gives basic aqueous solutions. Reacts with acids. Does not usually react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents.

Health Hazard

Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.

Fire Hazard

Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may pollute waterways.

Flammability and Explosibility

Non flammable

Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by ingestion. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic vapors of magnesium and F-.

Potential Exposure

Magnesium silicofluoride is used as aconcrete hardener and waterproofing agent. Hexafluoro isused as an agricultural chemical.

First aid

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.

storage

Color Code—Blue: Health Hazard/Poison: Storein a secure poison location. Prior to working with thischemical you should be trained on its proper handling andstorage. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, wellventilated area away from strong acids (such as hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric).

Shipping

This compound requires a shipping label of“POISONOUS/TOXIC MATERIALS.” It falls in HazardClass 6.1 and Packing Group III.
