Synthesis

Palladium/carbon catalyst (476 mg) was added to a stirring solution of 3-benzyloxy-4-methylbenzonitrile (2.46 g, 11.0 mmol) in methanol (25 mL) under the protection of inert atmosphere. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was stirred continuously at room temperature overnight under hydrogen atmosphere. Upon completion of the reaction, the catalyst was filtered through a diatomaceous earth pad to remove the catalyst. The resulting filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give a final 3-hydroxy-4-methylbenzonitrile 1.367 g in 93.6% yield.
