Uses

Methylenaminoacetonitrile can be used as a precursor in organic synthesis.

Preparation

Methylenaminoacetonitrile can be prepared by the action of formaldehyde on a mixture of ammonium chloride, potassium cyanide, and acetic acid, and by the action of formaldehyde on aminoacetonitrile.

Purification Methods

Crystallise MAAN from EtOH or acetone. It crystallises nicely from H2O but with considerable loss of material. It is an inhibitor of bone growth. [Adams & Langley Org Synth Coll Vol I 355 1941.]
