ANGELIC ANHYDRIDE Usage And Synthesis
Uses
Angelic Anhydride is a reagent in the improved synthesis of angelate esters, which are the active chemical behind the strong pain-relieving and spasmolytic action of extracts from the plant butterbur.
Synthesis
Angelic anhydride (dahuric anhydride) was prepared as follows: to a solution of angelic acid (5 g, 50 mmol) in dichloromethane (100 mL) at room temperature was added N,N’ Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (8.6 mL, 60% in xylene, 25 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at this temperature for 1 hour. The precipitate was filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuum. The residue was purified by chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate 10:1) to give 4.3 g of the title compound dahuric anhydride as an oil (94%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3)δ 6.376.25 (m, 2H), 2.06 (dq, J=7.4, 1.5 Hz, 6H), 1.971.93 (m, 6H).
