1,2-Bis(2-chloroethoxy)ethane Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
clear colorless to pale yellow liquid. Insoluble in water. Combustible.
Uses
Solvent for hydrocarbons, oils, etc.; extractant; intermediate for resins and insecticides; organic synthesis.
Uses
1,2-Bis(2-chloroethoxy)ethane is used as pharmaceutical intermediate.
Uses
1,2-bis(2-chloroethoxy)ethane was used in the synthesis of 1,1′-[1,2-ethanediylbis(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl)]bis[3-methyl-1H-imidazolium-1-yl] chloride.
Synthesis
Triethylene glycol (0.28 mol) and pyridine (49 mL, 0.61 mol) were mixed in benzene (250 mL) in a dry reaction flask and the resulting reaction mixture was heated to reflux. Dichlorosulfoxide (0.61 mole) was added to the reaction mixture slowly and dropwise for about 3 hours. At the end of the addition the reaction mixture was kept at reflux and stirred for 16 hours. At the end of the reaction the resulting reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and hydrochloric acid (6.3 mL, 11.8 M) diluted in diluted water (50 mL) was slowly added dropwise to the above reaction mixture for about 15 minutes. The upper benzene solution in the reaction mixture was separated and concentrated under reduced pressure to evaporate the benzene solution and the resulting residue was the target product molecule 1,2-bis(2-chloroethoxy)ethane.
