General procedure for the synthesis of 1-(5-bromo-2-nitrophenyl)ethanone from 3'-bromoacetophenone: 100 g of 3'-bromoacetophenone was slowly added dropwise to 500 ml of a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid (1:7, v/v), pre-cooled to -20°C, kept the reaction temperature at -20°C and stirred overnight. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was quenched by pouring it into ice water, and the precipitate was collected by filtration to give 107 g of 2-nitro-5-bromoacetophenone, the product was a yellow solid in 87% yield.
