DECAHYDRONAPHTHALENE-D18 Usage And Synthesis

Chemical Properties

clear colorless liquid

Synthesis

Decahydronaphthalene-D18 was prepared as follows: 2% Pd in activated carbon was added with the deuterium gas inlet completely closed. 16 g of cis-decahydronaphthalene was added at 1650 ??C. A thermometer assembly was inserted into the cell and a condenser was attached to the condenser arm and fitted with an outlet tube for deuterium gas discharge. The deuterium gas was then bubbled through the reaction cell at a rate of 40 cc/min. The cell assembly was lowered into a thermostatic oil bath and maintained at 1900 C. Samples were periodically removed for analysis by removing the cells from the water bath, turning off the deuterium flow, and then extracting the sample through the thermometer port (with a syringe). The system was then started again as described above. The 13.6 g (75%) of decahydronaphthalene-D18 obtained after 496 h of exchange was measured by NMR as 99% trans and 8% cis decahydronaphthalene-D18. Similarly, starting from decahydronaphthalene, decahydronaphthalene-D18 (99 atomic % D) was obtained after about 500 h as cis decahydronaphthalene-D18 (8%) and trans decahydronaphthalene-D18 (92%).
