Chemical Properties

Purple-red powder. Insoluble in water, ethanol, acetone, toluene, slightly soluble in hot chloroform, pyridine, o-chlorophenol, soluble in tetrahydronaphthalene, xylene. Reddish-purple in alkaline insurance powder reducing solution, orange in acidic solution.

Synthesis

4,10-Dibromoanthanthrone, Indanthren Brilliant Orange RK, is prepared from 1,1'-binaphthyl-8,8'- dicarboxylic acid in sulfuric acid monohydrate at 35 ?C, followed by bromination in the presence of iodine . It is also used as a pigment.
