Uses
Poly (vinyl cinnamate) has been used to study the cyclodimerization of poly (vinyl cinnamate) in solution using pyrylium and thiopyrylium salts. It can also be used to synthesize photocurable polymer gate dielectricsto fabricate cylindrical organic field-effect transistors.
Synthesis
Poly(vinyl cinnamates) (PVCi) can be prepared by esterification of the hydroxyl group in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and the carboxyl group in p-chlorocinnamic acid. All grafting modification was carried out in a
four-necked flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, con
denser, and nitrogen inlet. PVA was dissolved in DMSO
(5 wt% solution) at 80℃, certain amounts of cinnamic
acid was added in PVA solution, the reaction mixture was
stirred at 35℃ for 24 h with the catalysis of DCC and DMAP. At the end of the reaction, the product was precipitated twice in ethanol to completely remove the solvent. Then the product was purified by removing the
unreacted cinnamic acid in extractor with ethanol and
then dried under vacuum at 30℃ for 24 h. The modified
PVCi was completely insoluble in water in which PVA
had been freely soluble before graft modification. The DS
was controlled by adjusting the molar ratio of cinnamic
acid to the hydroxyl groups.
