NONAETHYLENE GLYCOL MONODODECYL ETHER Usage And Synthesis
Uses
Nonaethylene Glycol Monododecyl Ether is a nonionic surfactant useful in the formation of emulsions.
Definition
ChEBI: Polidocanol is a hydroxypolyether that is nonaethylene glycol in which one of the terminal hydroxy functions is substituted by a lauryl (dodecyl) group. It has a role as a nonionic surfactant, a hepatotoxic agent and a sclerotherapy agent. It is functionally related to a nonaethylene glycol.
Application
Nonaethylene glycol monododecyl ether has been used in a study to assess a procedure for analyzing total lipid and triacylglycerol using bovine liver tissue. It has also been used in a study to investigate how particle size of aggregates can be measured by the concentration dependence of the amplitude of the autocorrelation function.
General Description
Nonaethylene glycol monododecyl ether [C12H25O(CH2CH2O)9H] (AEO9) is a non-ionic surfactant.
Mechanism of action
Nonaethylene Glycol Monododecyl Ether locally damages the endothelium of blood vessels. Following endothelial damage, platelets accumulate at the site and attach to the vein wall, eventually forming a dense network of platelets, cellular debris and fibrin that clogs the vessel. Eventually, the blood vessel is replaced by connective fibrous tissue.
Synthesis
Nonaethylene glycol monododecyl ether is prepared by the reaction of oxirane and 1-Dodecanol. The specific synthesis steps are as follows:
General procedure: Ethoxylated fatty alcohols (C8,10,12) were producing using asemi-micro apparatus with a K10 clay catalyst at 40-50 ℃ The EO was added to the reactor (freefrom oxygen) containing 0.1 mol fatty alcohols and about0.2-0.55 wt% catalyst to give the desired average degree ofethoxylation (5, 7 and 9 mol of ethylene oxide). The EO uptake (average degree of ethoxylation)was determined from the increasing weight of thereaction mixture and confirmed by IR and 1HNMR.
