Methyl 4-(aminomethyl)benzoate Usage And Synthesis

Uses

Methyl 4-aminomethylbenzoate is mainly used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, especially in the fields of medicine and chemical research.

Synthesis

Thionyl chloride (473 g, 3.97 mol) was added slowly and dropwise to a solution of 4-(aminomethyl)benzoic acid (300 g, 1.98 mol) in methanol (5 L). The reaction mixture was heated and refluxed for 6 h. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure to give the crude product. The crude product was purified by acid-base treatment to finally obtain methyl 4-(aminomethyl)benzoate (300 g, 92% yield) in liquid form.
