Biphenylene can be used as an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis.

Definition

ChEBI: Biphenylene is an ortho-fused polycyclic arene and an ortho-fused tricyclic hydrocarbon.

Synthesis

Biphenylene is obtained by several methods; one of the best, in spite of the low yield, involved pyrolysis of dibenziodolium iodide in the presence of cuprous oxide.

Purification Methods

Biphenylene from yellow crystals from cyclohexane, MeOH (m 110-111o) or EtOH (m 111-112o). It sublimes in vacuo. The 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone complex has m 154o and the picrate gives red needles m 122o from EtOH. [Beilstein 5 I 298, 5 II 530, 5 III 1935, 5 IV 2137.]
