Chemical Properties

white to light yellow crystalline flakes

Uses

1,2-Dimethylhydrazine is a potent carcinogen that acts as a DNA alkylating agent. It is used to induce colon tumors in experimental animals. It was also used in preparation of spiroisoquinolinedione aldose reductase inhibitors.

Definition

ChEBI: A hydrochloride resulting from the reaction of 1,2,dimethylhydrazine with 2 mol eq. of hydrogen chloride.

General Description

Prisms (from water) or white crystalline powder. Distinct amine fishy or ammonia-like odor.

Air & Water Reactions

Extremely hygroscopic. Water soluble.

Reactivity Profile

1,2-DIMETHYLHYDRAZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE is a reducing agent. Incompatible with oxidizing agents and bases.

Fire Hazard

Flash point data for 1,2-DIMETHYLHYDRAZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE are not available; however, 1,2-DIMETHYLHYDRAZINE DIHYDROCHLORIDE is probably combustible.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Induces colon cancer in rats and mice.

Safety Profile

Suspected carcinogen with experimental carcinogenic, neoplastigenic, and tumorigenic data. Poison by ingestion and subcutaneous routes. Experimental reproductive effects. Mutation data reported. A rocket fuel. When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of HCl and NOx
