Piperazine (1 mmol) and acetic anhydride (2 mmol) were added to a 25 mL round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer, and SiO2/PDA-SO3H (30 mg, 1 mol/mL H+) was used as a catalyst. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature and the progress of the reaction was monitored by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and the catalyst was separated by centrifugation. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was washed with saturated NaHCO3 solution (1 x 15 mL) and the product was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 10 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and the solvent was evaporated under vacuum. The resulting product 1,1'-(piperazine-1,4-diyl)diethyl ketone is a compound known from literature.
