Iridium dioxide Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
BLACK POWDER
Uses
Iridium(IV) oxide is used in the coating of anode-electrodes for industrial electrolysis in association with other rare oxides. It is also used in microelectrodes for electrophysiology research.
Synthesis
The iridium powder is obtained by heating to 107??C in air or oxygen, or by careful addition of a strong base to a boiling (IrCl6)2-solution, which produces a blue precipitate, the latter being dried in a vacuum, and then its hydrate is allowed to dehydrate completely in nitrogen at 350??C.
