Light yellow to yellow slightly viscous volatile essential oil with a strong and persistent characteristic woody aroma. Soluble in ethanol, most non-volatile oils, propylene glycol and mineral oil, sometimes turbid, insoluble in glycerin and water.

(Z)-α-Santalol is a key component of sandalwood oil, which when purified, can be used to suppress lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cytokine/chemokine production in skin cells.
