food additive: A substance addedto a food during its manufacture orprocessing in order to improve itskeeping qualities, texture, appearance,or stability or to enhance itstaste or colour. Additives are usuallypresent in minute quantities; they includecolouring materials, sweeteners,preservatives, antioxidants,emulsifiers, and stabilizers.
