Preparation

To a solution of 4-methoxyacetophenone (2 mmol) in methanol, containing iodine (1 mmol) and a 30% aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (1.2 mmol), was added concentrated sulfuric acid (0.2 mmol) and the mixture stirred at 60° for 1–3 h (94%)
To a solution of 4-methoxyacetophenone (1 mmol) in methanol, containing iodine (0.5 mmol) and a 30% aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (0.6 mmol), was added H4SiO4.12WO3 (0.03–0.033 mmol) and the mixture stirred at 65° for 1.5–3 h (95%)
Also obtained by reaction of iodine with 4-methoxyacetophenone in the pres-ence of cupric oxide in methanol at 65° for 1 h (99%). Also obtained by reaction of potassium iodide with w-chloro-p-methoxyacetophenone by prolonged heating in aqueous alcohol or in nitromethane.
