THIOCINEOLE Chemical Properties,Usage,Production

Uses

THIOCINEOLE can be used as a chemical and pharmaceutical intermediate.

Synthesis

(R)-Limonene (161.8 mL, 1.0 mol, 99:1e.r.) was placed in a 1.0 L three-necked, round-bottomed flask fitted with a reflux condenser and thermometer (note the internal temperature). Elemental sulfur (32.0 g, 1.0 mol) and -terpinene (160.6 mL, 1.0 mol) were then added. The reaction mixture was heated to 125 C (internal temperature) for 8 h (the oil bath temperature was set to 130 C.) After 8 h, more elemental sulfur (25.6 g, 0.8 mol) and -terpinene (176.7 mL, 1.1 mol) were added to the reaction mixture. It was then stirred at 125 C for an additional 16 hours. From the 1H-NMR spectrum of the crude reaction mixture after 24 hours it was estimated that less than 5% (R)-Limonene remained unreacted but -terpinene was completely consumed. The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature, transferred to a 1.0 L single neck round bottom flask and connected to a vacuum distillation apparatus having a Vigreux column (18.0 cm long). The above compound 2 was distilled at 40-46C/about 50C.
