Uses

1-Octanesulfonyl chloride is suitable for use in the preparation of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium alkylsulfonates (ionic liquids).

Synthesis

A mixture of 1-Mercaptooctane (1 mmol), 30 percent H2O2 (3 mmol, 0.3 mL), and TiCl4 (1 mmol, 0.11 mL) was stirred in CH3CN at 25 °C. A white solid (TiO2) immediately precipitated. After completion of the reaction as indicated by TLC, the mixture was quenched by adding H2O (10 mL), extracted with EtOAc (4 .x. 5 mL), and the extract was dried over anhydrous MgSO4. The filtrate was evaporated under a vacuum to afford the analytically pure product 1-Octanesulfonyl Chloride.
