Description
Nonadecane (C19H40) is a high-performance medium-temperature phase change material (PCM) characterised by a suitable melting point, high latent heat, good chemical stability and unique rotational phase behaviour. It is widely used in building energy efficiency, smart textiles, thermal energy storage systems and research into phase change mechanisms.

Uses
n-Nonadecane is used as a fragrance agent in cosmetics and perfumes. It is used by egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis to discriminate between female and male hosts.

ChEBI: Nonadecane is a straight-chain alkane with 19 carbon atoms. It has been found as a component of essential oils isolated from Artemisia armeniaca. It has a role as a volatile oil component and a plant metabolite.

Reactivity Profile
Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as N-NONADECANE, may be incompatible with strong oxidizing agents like nitric acid. Charring of the hydrocarbon may occur followed by ignition of unreacted hydrocarbon and other nearby combustibles. In other settings, aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons are mostly unreactive. They are not affected by aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, most oxidizing agents, and most reducing agents. When heated sufficiently or when ignited in the presence of air, oxygen or strong oxidizing agents, they burn exothermically to produce carbon dioxide and water.
Synthesis
In the reaction kettle into the bromoalkane mixture as well as sodium metal, stirring to raise the temperature to 80 C, and maintained at 120 ~ 140 C, add the residue is completed, control the temperature of 140 ~ 160 C, constant temperature for 2 hours; in turn, add ethanol as well as water, the organic matter will be divided out and washed with water to neutral, and then dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, distillation to collect the distillate, the finished product is collected n-nineteenth alkane through the water distillation column according to the different boiling points.
