Chemical Properties
White to off-white crystalline powder
Uses
Barium iodide is used to prepare organobarium compounds by reacting with alkyl potassium compounds. It is also involved in the preparation of active barium metal by reducing with lithium biphenyl.
Uses
Reagent for facile synthesis of poly(phenylcarbyne), a precursor to diamond-like carbon.
Uses
In the manufacture of other iodides.
Purification Methods
It crystallises from water (0.5mL/g) by partial evaporation in a desiccator. POISONOUS.
