Uses

2-Amino-3,5-dimethylpyridine is used in the evaluation ofsubstituted 2-aminopyridines as inhibitors of nitric oxide synthases.

Synthesis

3,5-Dimethyl-N-(2,4,4-trimethylpentan-2-yl)pyridin-2-amine (6.5 g, 27.7 mmol) was mixed with 2. 2,2-Trifluoroacetic acid (46 mL, 621 mmol) was heated to 50 C. for 4.5 hr. The mixture was concentrated under vacuum and then diluted with dichloromethane (10 mL) and water (10 mL). The layers were separated and the aqueous phase was neutralized to pH 7-8 using saturated bicarbonate solution.The product was then extracted with dichloromethane (3 x 10 mL) and the organics were dried using a phase separator cartridge. The solvent was evaporated under vacuum. The title compound, 3,5-dimethylpyridin-2-amine (2.99 g), was a white solid.
