Uses

trans-4-Nitrocinnamic acid, is used as a raw material for saccharine. It is also used as a useful chemical for biological applications. Some other applications include it is used as an organic intermediate.

Preparation

P-nitrocinnamic acid was synthesized from 4-nitroiodobenzene and acrylic acid in about 99% yield.

Purification Methods

Crystallise the acid from H2O. The p-bromophenacyl ester has m 191o (from AcOH). [Beilstein 9 H 606, 9 III 2744.]
