Uses
Sulcatol is an compound used in the synthesis of aggregation pheromone of the ambrosia beetle, an insect pest of harvested timber in the Pacific North Coast.
6-METHYL-5-HEPTEN-2-OL, not nearly as penetrating in
odor as the ketone,
finds some use in perfume compositions as a
minor part of topnote bases for Citrus
colognes, Oriental bases, Rose modifications,
etc.
Production Methods
6-METHYL-5-HEPTEN-2-OL can be produced:
1) by reduction or catalytic hydrogenation of
Methylheptenone.
2) from Geranonitrile by boiling it with alcoholic Potassium hydroxide.
