In a 20 mL two-necked flask, (μ3,η2,η3,η5-aceene)Ru3(CO)7 (1 or 0.1 mol% relative to vinyl ether) was dissolved in a minimal amount of anhydrous dioxane. Hydrogen-containing silane (10 to 30 mol% relative to the vinyl ether) was added to this solution and the mixture was stirred at 50°C for 30 minutes. A gradual darkening of the initial orange color of the solution was observed. Subsequently, vinyl ether was added dropwise and the mixture was continued to be stirred at 50°C. Upon completion of the reaction, the volatiles were removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography using hexane/EtOAc as eluent to give the final target product 3-methyl-3-phenylbutyraldehyde.
