General procedure for the synthesis of 9-bromo-1-nonene from 8-nonen-1-ol: Triphenylphosphine (5.42 g, 20.67 mmol) was dissolved in 20 ml of acetonitrile and placed in a cold bath at -10 °C. Subsequently, bromine (1.01 ml, 19.83 mmol) was slowly added dropwise and the reaction mixture was stirred at that temperature for 30 min. Next, a solution of 8-nonen-1-ol (2 g, 14.06 mmol) and pyridine (1.8 ml, 22.36 mmol) in 10 ml of acetonitrile was added. The cold bath was removed and the reaction mixture was continued to be stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by evaporation and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography using heptane as eluent. Finally, vacuum distillation was carried out through a bulb tube oven at 120 °C/1 mm Hg to give a colorless liquid product (1.44 g, 50% yield).
