GENERAL METHOD: 1 g of NaOH (25 mmol) was dissolved in 4 cm3 of a solvent mixture of EtOH/HO (85/15; v/v) and cooled to the appropriate temperature. Subsequently, 9 cm3 EtOH solution containing ester 18-20 (2.21 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred continuously for 5 hours at room temperature. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in 30 cm3 water and the aqueous layer was washed with 2 x 15 cm3 CHCl The aqueous layer was subsequently acidified with concentrated HCl and extracted with 3 x 15 cm3 CHCl All organic layers were combined, dried with NaSO and finally evaporated to dryness.
